Sustainable Development – Optimal Solution for Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has rich and extensive natural resource base and further socio-economic development of BiH largely depends on environmentally sustainable and cost-effective use of resources. Therefore, the challenge for BiH is to develop human capital and institutional capacities for balancing the specific needs for economic growth and the demands for sustainable development. Sustainable development implies the realization of three general objectives: stable economic development, social responsibility and environmental protection. These objectives may only be accomplished by mutual cooperation of all stakeholders.

COR advocates for integrating sustainable development into economic, social and private sector planning. We believe that sustainable development is the best solution for BiH greatest challenges now and in the future (economic recovery, EU accession process, democratization processes, social and environmental issues).

Sustainable development stands for meeting the needs of present generations without jeopardizing the needs of futures generations - a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. It offers a vision of progress that integrates immediate and longer-term needs, local and global needs, and regards social, economic and environmental needs as inseparable and interdependent components of human progress.

Sustainable development is not just about the environment. It entails balancing the economic, social and environmental objectives of society - the three pillars of sustainable development - integrating them wherever possible, through mutually supportive policies and practices, and making trade-offs where it is not possible.
